Most common concerns for Mothers before family or "mommy & me" photos

Taking family or mommy & me photos can feel overwhelming for everyone but especially for Moms. Typically mom is the one booking the photos but also worried about how everyone is going to look and act. So I have complied some of the most common concerns I hear from moms as a photographer.

           What do we wear?

Pick 2 colors that everyone can incorporate into their outfits. It does not have to be a specific shade, every one does not have to match exactly and, they to NOT have to be the main colors in the outfit. The goal is to look cohesive not blend together into one big blob. Also make sure everyone is comfortable, of course you want to look nice but you also do not want to worry about showing something you do not want photographed, or not being able to breath if you are asked to sit. Think elegant comfort. Mom, to be really honest, you will set the tone for these photos so make sure you pick something you feel confident in, even if it means styling yourself first and having everyone else coordinate around you. It is ok, these are your photos as much as anyone else's.

My kid(s) cannot sit in one position for very long, are you sure you can get a good photo?

OF COURSE!! Kids are not made to sit still and smile and if we ask them to the smiles looks fake. It is my job as the photographer to meet them where they are and make it look good. I personally enjoy using prompts that feel more like games to capture those genuine smiles you want to remember forever. So here are a few things you can do before the photo shoot to make sure they are ready to participate:

-prepare them by telling them what is going to happen (make it sound fun and exciting)

-make sure they are fed and hydrated

-do not schedule it during a nap time or right at bed time

How do I pick the location?

YOU DON'T!! You are hiring a professional photographer, it is their job to be knowledgable about the area and at least give you a few options. Something I really like to do is ask my clients what vibe they are going for, or have them send me a Pinterest board of inspiration so I can see what types of locations they are into. Then I can narrow it down and give them choices or tell them where we will go. IF you do have a specific place you want to go just tell the photographer! If that location will not work it is our job to tell you.

What if there is not a good photo of everyone?

I promise there will be. Let us worry about it, you sit in the moment and enjoy everyone as they are right now in this moment.

           I am a Bride-to-be but I am not photogenic

As a photographer I hear "you'll have to tell me exactly what do to, I am not good at this" a lot. My best advice for a bride-to-be who's worries about not being photogenic, is to ignore the camera. I said ignore the CAMERA, not the photographer. People get uncomfortable with the idea of a photograph capturing all the things they do not like about themselves, so they suck in, or get really stiff because they think they will look better. The truth is doing those things only make you look stiff and uncomfortable, just like how you felt. Photographs are snippets of time where you can see emotion, so if you focus on your spouse, and how you feel towards them, or how excited you are to get to spend the rest of your life loving this person and them you, the photographs will show that. Try to use the time with your photographer to focus on each other, slowing down, and being present. The wedding day is such a whirlwind already, instead of having your portrait time add to the stress, use it to decompress. The photographers job is to make it look good, your job is to be present in the moment you want captured.
